Lacrosse tryout evaluation form

A fair lacrosse tryout has each coach score players on their own, before any discussion, and makes sure every player is seen by at least two different coaches. This free form is built that way.

How to use it

Five rules for a fair tryout.

  • Number every player. With groups, letters keep numbers unique.
  • Each coach scores alone first. Talk after.
  • Check the coverage sheet before any decisions. Anyone seen by fewer than two coaches gets another look.
  • Score first, decide teams second. Evaluation and team placement are separate steps.
  • Scores are for the club's decisions, not for sending to families.
Why it's built this way

Built so one coach's eye doesn't decide.

Coaches don't agree on their own.

At a national judo camp, coaches watching the same young athletes didn't agree on who was most talented, and their own ratings moved overnight.

Roberts et al., 2020
A checklist alone doesn't fix it.

In youth hockey, coaches and scouts agreed little, even with a checklist.

Wiseman et al., 2014
The rater moves the score.

More than half of the difference in ratings comes from who is rating, not the player.

Scullen et al., 2000
So: score alone, and get two coaches on everyone.

That's what the coverage sheet is for.

Or let your coaches just talk

Skip the clipboard.

Every coach on every field just talks. You get a complete picture of every player, and pick your teams from it.

  • Placed by position. Each player's summary places them against others at the same position.
  • Pick your teams right then and there, then upload them into your roster management platform.

Tryout summary

Dodging and vision are the standout signals: coaches described her first step as elite and noted she reads the field two passes ahead. Mindset signal is uniformly positive across coachability, composure, compete level, and communication, all at maximum intensity.

Observations

Coaches described her first step as elite: she blew by her defender on every dodge and beat her mark off the split every single rep. Vision was called out repeatedly: she sees the field two passes ahead and hit the skip on time. Took a correction and applied it on the next rep; organized her group without being asked. Favors her right hand: predictable dodging left.
